According to the new regulations, PhD students must apply for a Research Visa instead of a Student Visa. The University/host institution in Spain must first obtain the Residence Authorization on behalf of the student through the Unit for Large Companies and Strategic Groups in Spain. Visa applications must not be accepted without the approved Residence Authorization.
- National Visa Application Form, completed and signed.
- Passport with minimum validity of 1 year and at least two blank pages.
- Residence Authorization issued by the Unit for Large Companies and Strategic Groups in Spain.
- Hosting Agreement with the University or research center.
- Criminal Record Certificate from the countries where the applicant has lived during the past 2 to 5 years, duly apostilled/legalized and translated into Spanish.
Visa to carry out training, research, development, and innovation activities in public or private entities in the following cases:
- Research personnel referred to in Article 13 and the first additional provision of Law 14/2011, of June 1, on Science, Technology and Innovation.
- Scientific and technical personnel who carry out scientific research, development, and technological innovation work in business entities or R&D&I centers established in Spain.
- Researchers hosted under an agreement by public or private research organizations.
- Professors hired by universities, higher education and research institutions or centers, or business schools established in Spain.
The following relatives of the researcher may also obtain a visa:
- The spouse or common-law partner.
- Minor children and adult children who are financially dependent on the researcher and who have not formed a family unit themselves.
- The ancestors who are in the care of the researcher.

- Taken against a white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
- Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
- Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
- Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such
items because of their religious belief or ethnic background]
- Please stick the Photograph on the Visa Application Form.
